Beyond but Among

“For thus says the One who is high and lifted up, who inhabits eternity, whose name is Holy: ‘I dwell in a high and holy place, and also with him who is of a contrite and lowly spirit, to revive the spirit of the lowly, and to revive the heart of the contrite.'” Isaiah 57:15 (ESV)

God is transcendent and yet immanent. He is “high and lifted up,” he “inhabits eternity,” “his name is Holy” – in short, he is in another dimension beyond his creation. At the same time, he is “with him who is of a contrite and lowly spirit,” and he revives the spirit of the lowly and the heart of the contrite. What a breathtaking concept – we have a God who is over all and ultimately controls all, and yet a God who bends to care for the lowly and the contrite, and in fact, all of his creatures.
